That sounds pretty weird, but I think I'm missing something. I'm familiar with the smiley face, that's what happens when Chrome's tab indicator shows more than 99 open tabs (it can't fit triple digits into that little box).
Your question got cut off right at the end though, so I'm not entirely sure how to answer it. But for an easy way to close the tabs out, drag the Chrome icon out of your app drawer, then drop it on the "App Info" icon at the top of the screen. From there, tap "Force Stop", then "Clear Data". That should start you off fresh with only 1 tab open.
