Samsung may be considering one of its most notable Galaxy S camera changes in years. Early Galaxy S27 leaks suggest the standard models are being tested with Sony main sensors, while the rumored Pro and Ultra phones could receive higher-resolution ultrawide, telephoto, and selfie cameras.
None of the hardware is final. Samsung has not announced the Galaxy S27 lineup, and the phones are not expected until 2027. Reports also conflict over the names of the four possible models and whether the Galaxy S27 Ultra will keep its current four-camera arrangement.
GalaxyClub reported on July 23 that Samsung is testing Galaxy S27 and S27+ prototypes with a 50MP Sony main sensor and optical image stabilization. The outlet cautioned that a similar Sony-sensor rumor emerged during Galaxy S25 development but did not appear in the finished phone.
Galaxy S27 leak suggests four models
Samsung is reportedly using the internal identifiers NM1 through NM4 for the Galaxy S27 project. Reporting based on WinFuture's findings says "NM" may stand for "New Miracle" or "Next Miracle," following the "Miracle" codename used for the Galaxy S26 family.
Four identifiers suggest Samsung is developing four phones, although they do not establish the final product names. NM1 has been associated with the standard Galaxy S27, NM3 with a possible Galaxy S27 Pro, and NM4 with the Galaxy S27 Ultra. Published reports are less consistent about NM2.
The expected lineup includes a Galaxy S27, S27+, S27 Pro, and S27 Ultra. A Pro model could give Samsung room to offer stronger cameras below the Ultra tier, but its size, price, and position in the lineup remain unknown.
Galaxy S27 and S27+ may switch to Sony sensors
The possible Sony main camera is the most notable reported change for the Galaxy S27 and S27+. Samsung is said to be testing a 50MP sensor with optical image stabilization, but the exact Sony model has not been identified.
That missing detail limits what can be inferred from the leak. A different supplier would not automatically improve low-light photos, autofocus, video quality, or shutter speed. Those results would also depend on the sensor's size and design, the lens, Samsung's image processing, and the finished camera software.
Other rear-camera upgrades appear limited. The standard models are rumored to retain a 12MP ultrawide camera and an unspecified telephoto camera. It is also unclear whether they will receive the 16MP front camera reportedly planned for the higher-end phones or continue with a 12MP selfie camera.
Testing a Sony sensor does not mean Samsung is abandoning its ISOCELL camera business. Samsung could use a mix of Sony and Samsung sensors across the lineup, and the latest component leak does not identify the Ultra's main camera.
Galaxy S27 Pro could receive the biggest upgrades
The rumored Galaxy S27 Pro currently has the most extensive list of camera changes. According to SamMobile's July 24 leak summary, the phone may use a 50MP Sony IMX855 ultrawide, a 50MP telephoto camera with optical image stabilization, and a 16MP autofocus selfie camera.
The Pro's main camera and telephoto zoom range remain unknown. Current reporting points to one dedicated telephoto camera rather than the two-camera zoom system associated with recent Ultra models.
The selfie camera may also include optical image stabilization, although that feature is not firmly established. Autofocus would help keep faces sharp at different distances, while stabilization could reduce movement in handheld video and some low-light shots.
A 50MP ultrawide could capture more detail and allow more aggressive cropping than the 12MP camera rumored for the standard S27 models. Its real advantage would still depend on the optics, autofocus performance, sensor readout, and Samsung's processing.
Galaxy S27 Ultra reports conflict over zoom cameras
The Galaxy S27 Ultra has the least settled camera configuration. The latest component reporting points to a 50MP Sony IMX855 ultrawide and a 50MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom. A second Sony telephoto sensor is also mentioned, which would preserve a four-camera rear system.
That account conflicts with earlier tipster-based reporting that described an Ultra prototype with three rear cameras: a main camera, an ultrawide, and one telephoto. The reports may refer to different prototypes, incomplete component records, or plans that Samsung later revised.
Earlier rumors have also pointed to a new 200MP main camera, but the latest component leak does not identify the primary sensor. The 200MP specification should therefore be treated as a separate, less-settled claim rather than part of the newly reported camera list.
The Ultra is also rumored to receive a 16MP autofocus selfie camera. Sources differ over whether it will include optical image stabilization, leaving that feature unconfirmed for both the Pro and Ultra.
The biggest details remain unsettled
The leaks provide an early look at the configurations Samsung is testing, not a final specification sheet. The exact Sony sensor in the Galaxy S27 and S27+ remains unknown, the four-model naming structure is unresolved, and reports disagree over the Ultra's telephoto system.
The rumored Pro model may ultimately be the more consequential change. A phone combining a 50MP ultrawide, a 50MP telephoto, and an improved selfie camera could offer more advanced photography hardware without requiring buyers to choose the largest Ultra model.
Samsung could still change individual sensors, camera counts, and model names before production. Until those details appear in stronger production records or an official announcement, the Sony switch and Pro-tier upgrades remain promising possibilities rather than reasons to plan an upgrade.
