The Galaxy Z Fold 8 is the world's lightest book-style foldable, at 201g, and among the thinnest, measuring 4.5mm unfolded, which Android Authority confirmed is slimmer than the Galaxy S25 Edge at 5.8mm. Those numbers reflect genuine engineering progress. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 thinner and wider design trade-offs, though, deserve closer examination than the spec sheet provides: the redesign that produced a lighter, more pocketable phone also created an opening for Samsung to move key features up to the Ultra tier, drop S Pen support from the standard model, and price the result at $1,900, exactly $200 below a Fold 8 Ultra that keeps everything the standard model lost.

The Fold 8 also abandons the tall, narrow proportions that defined every prior generation. Its cover display is now 5.5 inches in a squarer footprint, a change that affects how the phone handles as a primary device, not just how it photographs in a press release. That shape shift is real progress. What's worth working through is how Samsung converted that progress into a product tiering decision, one where premium hardware concentrated at the top and the standard model absorbed most of the compromises.

How Samsung actually built a thinner, wider Fold

The thinner chassis wasn't achieved by shaving a millimeter off existing components. It required rebuilding the display structure from the ground up.

Samsung replaced the conventional plastic display backing with a dual-material structure it calls Flex Titanium: a titanium-alloy film bonded to an enhanced titanium plate. The film is only tens of micrometers thick, roughly one-third the width of a human hair, yet it stiffens the display, absorbs impact, and reduces surface variation at the fold, according to Samsung Newsroom. The result is a display module 10% thinner than its predecessor, which freed internal volume for a larger battery and improved thermal management.

Samsung's engineers at the London Unpacked briefing were clear that this wasn't component-level optimization. "Meaningful innovation cannot come from just optimizing one component in isolation," engineer Moon said, as reported by EFTM. "So, we re-engineered the whole system, including display structure, hinge and thermal design." The hinge moved from a single-rail to a dual-rail design to distribute folding stress more evenly. Cover glass upgraded from Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 to Ceramic 3, with Advanced Armor Aluminum protecting the frame. Both inner and outer displays now peak at 3,200 nits, up from the Fold 7's 2,600-nit ceiling, per PCMag UK.

The crease is better. Not gone. A dual-layer glass architecture on the inner display reduces visible crease by 20% compared to the Fold 7. At the same London briefing, Samsung engineers acknowledged the crease remains one of the form factor's next major problems, and declined to commit to a timeline for eliminating it. Seven generations in, Samsung's own engineers don't claim the foldable is finished.

One caveat worth stating plainly: Samsung's testing program covers more than a hundred reliability scenarios, including drops, pressure, moisture, and repeated fold cycles, as Notebookcheck notes. Those are Samsung's own tests. No independent long-term data on the Flex Titanium structure exists yet, and thinner materials raise legitimate durability questions regardless of how thorough the internal testing sounds.

That helps explain what the Fold 8 is. It doesn't, by itself, explain why the standard model lost so much camera hardware.

The engineering story explains what Samsung built. The product strategy explains what Samsung chose to keep and what it moved upmarket.

The camera downgrade is the most concrete Galaxy Z Fold 8 design compromise buyers will encounter on paper. The Fold 7 shipped with a 200MP main sensor and a full triple-camera array, per PCMag UK. The Fold 8 replaces that with two rear cameras: a 50MP primary and a 50MP ultrawide, with no telephoto. The 200MP sensor moves exclusively to the Fold 8 Ultra. Samsung hasn't publicly attributed this specific spec reduction to thinness alone; the more complete picture, based on how the lineup is structured, is that Samsung used the redesign as an opportunity to tier its camera hardware between the two models. No hands-on image quality comparisons existed at publication, so whether the gap is meaningful in real-world output remains untested. The step down in specs, confirmed by Android Authority, is significant on paper either way.

S Pen support is gone from the standard model entirely. For buyers who never used a stylus, that's irrelevant. For note-takers, annotators, and anyone who treated the large inner display as a writing surface, it removes the defining part of the Fold's productivity proposition. Losing it doesn't diminish what the Fold 8 is; it diminishes what the Fold was for a specific and vocal segment of its buyers, as Android Authority observed.

The $200 gap between the models makes these omissions conspicuous. The Fold 8 Ultra at $2,100 gets the 200MP camera with telephoto, S Pen support, a 5,000mAh battery against the standard's 4,800mAh, and an even thinner 4.1mm profile, according to Samsung Newsroom. Two hundred dollars isn't trivial, but against a $2,100 device it's a narrow enough margin to make the standard model's missing features feel less like inevitable design decisions and more like deliberate product differentiation. The factual basis is clear from the spec sheets; the conclusion that Samsung used the redesign to justify that tiering is an inference, but a well-supported one.

The redesign did preserve some meaningful gains. The thinner display module freed room for a 4,800mAh battery, up from the Fold 7's 4,400mAh, in a lighter phone. Wired charging jumps from 25W to 45W, with Samsung claiming 65% charge in 30 minutes. Both Fold 8 models share that 45W speed, one of the few specs where the standard isn't penalized relative to the Ultra, per Android Authority. The redesign improved genuine everyday metrics even as it stripped out premium ones.

Fold 8 vs. Fold 8 Ultra vs. Fold 7: what each model actually offers

Before recommending which device to buy, it helps to lay out what each option actually delivers across the dimensions that matter most.

Shape and weight: The Fold 8 at 201g is the lightest book-style foldable available, down 14g from the Fold 7's 215g, with a squarer cover display that handles more like a conventional phone in one-handed use. The Fold 8 Ultra, at 215g and 4.1mm unfolded, prioritizes thinness over weight reduction. The Fold 7 keeps the tall, narrow proportions that some buyers preferred.

Camera: The Fold 7 and Fold 8 Ultra both carry 200MP main sensors with telephoto capability. The standard Fold 8 steps down to a dual 50MP system with no telephoto. That's a spec regression relative to both the outgoing model and the current Ultra. Whether it translates to a real-world image quality gap depends on how Samsung has tuned the 50MP sensors, something that remains to be tested.

Battery and charging: The Fold 7 shipped with a 4,400mAh cell and 25W charging. The Fold 8 improves both, reaching 4,800mAh and 45W. The Fold 8 Ultra goes further to 5,000mAh at the same 45W wired speed. The standard Fold 8 and Ultra share charging parity, per PCMag UK, but the Ultra carries a larger cell.

Input: S Pen support exists on the Fold 8 Ultra. It's absent from the standard Fold 8 and was not present on the Fold 7 as a built-in feature. For stylus-dependent workflows, this is a binary distinction.

Price: Fold 7 at a discount. Fold 8 at $1,900. Fold 8 Ultra at $2,100. The gap between standard and Ultra is $200; the gap between the feature sets is considerably wider.

Who should actually buy the Fold 8 and who shouldn't

Buy the standard Fold 8 for shape. Buyers upgrading from a conventional slab phone an iPhone, a Galaxy S series device, anything with a fixed-glass form factor will feel the difference immediately. At 201g with a squarer cover screen, the Fold 8 handles more like a normal phone in daily one-handed use than any Fold before it. If the spec reduction in the camera system doesn't concern you, and an S Pen has never been part of your workflow, the standard model delivers a meaningfully better everyday Fold experience than the Fold 7.

Buy the Ultra for capability. Anyone who relied on S Pen input should spend the extra $200 without much deliberation. The same logic applies to photography-focused buyers: moving from a 200MP main sensor with telephoto to a dual 50MP system is a meaningful regression on paper, and until independent reviews establish otherwise, that's a risk worth avoiding at this price. The Ultra's additional battery capacity and 0.4mm of extra thinness are secondary factors, per PCMag UK; S Pen and camera are the primary ones.

Buy a discounted Fold 7 for value. This option doesn't get enough consideration. PCMag UK noted this week that most of the Fold 8's software upgrades, including updated Gemini integration and the improved QuickShare cross-platform sharing with Apple AirDrop, are expected to reach the Fold 7 via software update. The Fold 7 retains its 200MP camera and its taller, narrower form factor. For buyers who prefer that shape, or who can find the Fold 7 at a meaningfully reduced price, the older model remains a coherent choice. The Fold 8's redesign is a genuine reason to upgrade. It isn't a compelling reason for everyone.

One structural point worth keeping in mind: this is the first time Samsung has launched two distinct book-style foldable flagships simultaneously. The Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra are not equivalent devices at different price points, as PCMag UK observed. They target different use cases, with premium hardware concentrated at the top tier. Evaluating the standard Fold 8 as though it's the same phone with minor omissions will lead to disappointment.

A better Fold, a more complicated decision

The engineering accomplishment here is real. Samsung produced a lighter, thinner, brighter, faster-charging foldable than its predecessor, with a shape change that isn't cosmetic the squarer cover display genuinely changes how the Fold handles as a phone, confirmed across Android Authority and EFTM. That's worth acknowledging before getting into the caveats.

The value case for the standard model is less straightforward. Losing a 200MP main camera, a telephoto lens, and S Pen support while sitting $200 below an Ultra that retains all three makes the standard Fold 8 a difficult recommendation for anyone who used any of those features on a previous device. The price gap is too narrow to ignore.

What the Fold 8 generation actually signals is a structural shift. Samsung has formally split its book-style foldable lineup into tiers, with the standard model optimized for shape and everyday usability and the Ultra holding the premium capability stack. That division will likely define how the Fold 9 is built and priced. Whether buyers concentrate around the standard Fold 8's new shape or migrate toward the Ultra will tell Samsung a great deal about which direction to push the category next. The foldable form factor, by Samsung's own engineers' admission, isn't finished yet.
