Samsung Galaxy Z8 preorder record: standard Fold8 leads

Samsung Galaxy Z8 preorder record: standard Fold8 leads

Samsung's new Galaxy Z8 lineup set a preorder record in South Korea, and the standard Fold8, not the pricier Ultra, carried most of it. That's the story behind the Samsung Galaxy Z8 preorder record set this week: Samsung said the lineup drew more than 1.44 million preorders in South Korea during the seven-day window that ended Monday, Aug. 3, the highest preorder total for any Galaxy phone the company has ever released, foldable or not, according to The Korea Times.

That figure edges past the Galaxy Note10's 1.38 million preorders, a record that took 11 days to set back in 2019, and the Galaxy S26's 1.35 million seven-day tally from earlier this year, per The Korea Herald. The twist is in the model breakdown: the standard Fold8, rather than the Fold8 Ultra, accounted for 70% of all preorders, according to MK.

Seven days, 1.44 million preorders

Samsung says the Z8 lineup, which spans the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, Fold8, and Flip8, drew roughly 140 preorders per minute during the window, The Korea Times reports. That pace is what separates this record from the last one. The Note10 needed 11 days to reach 1.38 million; Galaxy Z Fold 8 preorders and the rest of the lineup got there in seven.

Compared with last year's Fold7 and Flip7, which combined for 1.04 million preorders, the total lineup grew nearly 39%, MK's reporting shows. A separate claim has circulated in U.S. coverage suggesting the Fold8 saw roughly three times the demand of its predecessor. 9to5Google traces that 3x figure to Korean media reports but notes it's unclear whether the comparison covers the standard Fold8 alone or includes the Ultra as well. The 39% lineup-wide growth is the sturdier number; treat the 3x claim as a narrower, less confirmed data point about one model.

All three figures ultimately trace back to numbers Samsung itself released, not an independently audited sales count. That doesn't make the record less real, but it does mean the more interesting question isn't whether it happened. It's why one specific phone is carrying it.

What the Samsung Galaxy Z8 preorder record says about the Fold8

The standard Fold8 alone accounted for roughly 1.01 million of the 1.44 million total preorders, per MK. Carrier data reinforces the model's pull without offering a precise head-to-head against its siblings: the Fold8 made up more than half of preorders at both SK Telecom and KT, and 67.4% at LG Uplus, The Korea Times reports.

The likely explanation, according to The Korea Herald, is a design change rather than pure brand momentum. Samsung gave the Fold8 a 4:3 "passport-like" shape this generation, pairing a 5.5-inch cover screen with a wider 7.6-inch inner display, while pushing the Fold8 Ultra toward buyers who want a bigger, more productivity-oriented device, according to The Korea Herald. That redesign, the outlet reports, appears to be what expanded the buyer pool, a read worth taking seriously given how closely the carrier data lines up with it.

None of this came cheap. The Fold8 starts at 2.28 million won, and the Flip8 opens at 1.68 million won, or about $1,179, per The Korea Herald. The available data speaks to the Fold8's 70% share of the overall mix rather than a direct sales comparison against the Flip8, so it's more accurate to describe the redesigned Fold8 as dominating the lineup than to say it "beat" the Flip8 in a head-to-head contest.

New buyers, not just repeat customers

The demographic shift behind this record may be more interesting than the record itself. SK Telecom says 62% of customers who preordered a foldable this cycle were switching from a conventional bar-style phone, up 10 percentage points from the Fold7 cycle, according to The Korea Times. That figure covers all foldable preorders, not the Fold8 specifically, but it points to Samsung pulling people out of the bar-phone habit rather than just upgrading existing foldable owners.

Samsung's own numbers add another wrinkle. Buyers in their teens through 30s made up about half of online purchases, roughly matching last year's pattern, per The Korea Herald. Female buyers in that same age bracket, across the Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra combined, more than doubled compared with the Fold7 generation, a device whose sales had skewed male.

These are company and carrier figures, not an independent market survey, so they're worth reading as a directional signal rather than a settled fact. Telecom industry sources quoted by MK said preorder incentives helped stimulate reservation demand, and it's still unclear whether regular retail sales will hold up once promotions end. The same sources added that foldable phones appear to be going mainstream, with younger buyers entering the category and rising interest among women.

Demand outpacing supply, and incentives cloud the picture

Outside Korea, the strain on Samsung's supply chain is visible. In the U.S., Samsung confirmed roughly a 50% jump in Fold8 demand over the prior generation, and some standard Fold8 configurations carried delivery estimates pushed into October, 9to5Google reported. Fold8 Ultra delays have run shorter, from a few days up to about three weeks, according to the same reporting, suggesting the standard model's popularity is straining production more than the flagship's.

In Japan, a market the iPhone has dominated for years, every color of the 256GB Fold8 except lavender sold out through Samsung's official online store, per The Korea Times. Some Korean buyers who preordered late were told they might not see their devices until September, MK notes.

Carrier incentives likely contributed to the surge as well, though industry sources cautioned that their effect on regular sales remains unclear. Korean operators stacked trade-in credits worth up to 50% of a device's reference price on top of interest-free installments, and customers who traded in an old phone by Sept. 6 could get up to 1 million won off, depending on the model and condition, according to MK. LG Uplus bundled Google's AI and cloud services into a "Reward Pass" plan, while KT paired the launch with streaming perks and discounts on Galaxy Buds and Watch devices, the same reporting shows. Strong incentives helped drive reservations, MK's sources said, but nobody yet knows if regular, promotion-free sales will match the preorder pace.

What happens after launch

The global rollout begins Friday, Aug. 7, across more than 100 countries, arriving just ahead of Apple's expected entry into the foldable category later this year, per The Korea Herald. That timing raises the stakes on whether the Z8's early numbers hold once a serious competitor shows up.

There's also a financial backdrop worth watching. Samsung's MX business posted its first-ever quarterly operating loss, 700 billion won, or about $489.5 million, in the April-June period, which the company attributed to rising memory costs, The Korea Times reports. An industry official quoted in that reporting said stronger sales of high-end models could help cushion that pressure, which puts real weight behind whether the Z8 line's early numbers hold up once the incentives fade.

None of the preorder data settles that question yet. What it shows is that a redesigned standard foldable pulled in switchers, younger buyers, and a notably larger share of women than the Fold7 generation did. Whether that appeal survives once the trade-in bonuses expire, and once the delayed configurations finally begin shipping, is the thing to watch next.
