How Galaxy Z Fold 8 App-Level Display Customization Fixes Foldables

Tipster Ice Universe demonstrated Galaxy Z Fold 8 app-level display customization this week on a Chinese Fold 8 unit, showing YouTube's recommendation feed shift from two rows of videos to three after adjusting that single app's display size. Nothing else on the device changed. Samsung appears to be shipping this per-app zoom feature in One UI 9 ahead of the August 7 retail launch, according to Android Headlines, with the caveat that review units are not yet on final firmware and all availability details remain provisional.

The feature surfaces as a Labs toggle under Settings > Advanced features on the standard Fold 8, offering five discrete zoom levels per app. It's currently absent on both the Fold 8 Ultra and Flip 8, Android Authority confirmed two days ago, though references to it appeared in Fold 8 Ultra firmware code before showing up in any device's settings.

The timing is not coincidental. Android's own solution to the foldable app problem is still several versions away from complete, and Samsung's response is to hand users a workaround rather than wait.

Why the feature exists: Android's foldable app problem, still unsolved

Google describes the Fold 8 as an "ultra-wide foldable" and acknowledges it represents a display canvas Android developers have rarely had to target. The company is urging app makers to drop fixed assumptions about screen orientation and size, build adaptive layouts, and take advantage of fold-awareness features that allow apps to split at the hinge, per 9to5Google last week. Google also warns that apps assuming a fixed portrait orientation "will likely suffer from sideways, stretched, or cropped previews during these folding transitions." That guidance reflects an ongoing problem, not a solved one.

The history here matters. When Android 12L introduced compatibility modes in 2022, the idea was to letterbox unoptimized apps on wide screens rather than stretch them badly across the full display. Google expected the black bars to pressure developers into building properly for large screens. It didn't work. By early 2026, major apps including Instagram and Booking.com still weren't optimized for multiple display sizes or orientations, leaving foldable owners staring at wasted screen real estate on hardware that cost them a premium, as Android Authority documented earlier this year.

Android 14 partially corrected course, giving users a manual override to force letterboxed apps full-screen even if that broke parts of their layout. Android 16 goes further, letting the system override app layout preferences on wide foldable displays, though developer opt-outs remain possible. Android 17 closes that gap entirely: apps targeting API level 37 will be required to support resizable layouts with no opt-out available, Android Authority reported earlier this year.

That's the destination. Samsung's per-app scaling arrives while the road is still being built.

How Galaxy Z Fold 8 app-level display customization works, and which apps benefit

The meaningful difference between Samsung's approach and Android's existing tools is granularity. Android's aspect-ratio overrides since Android 14 are essentially binary: force an app to fill the screen, or leave it alone. Samsung's per-app zoom operates within an already-displayed app, adjusting scaling across five steps to trade interface size for content density, or vice versa, without changing anything else on the device, according to Android Authority.

How useful that turns out to be depends almost entirely on which app you're adjusting. Google Maps is the clearest success case: both the map canvas and surrounding UI scale proportionally across all five levels, making each adjustment feel deliberate and immediately readable. Zoom out and you see more of the map; the interface scales with it. The feature behaves exactly as advertised.

YouTube reflects the feature's foldable-specific logic. The layout reflows at smaller zoom settings to fit that additional row of video recommendations on screen, trading interface scale for browsable content. That's a real, tangible payoff for anyone using the Fold 8's large inner display as a media hub.

Chrome is the least satisfying demo. Scale the UI down and the interface elements shrink, but webpage content stays largely the same size. The net effect is mostly cosmetic, Android Authority found. This isn't surprising: browsers manage their own rendering pipelines and handle text scaling independently of Android's display density system, so per-app zoom hits the chrome around the page rather than the page itself.

That inconsistency is worth understanding before evaluating the feature. Apps that handle display density natively, such as mapping tools, media players, and feed-based social apps, are where per-app scaling pays off. Apps that enforce fixed layouts or control their own rendering will respond less predictably. The feature works best as a precision tool for specific apps a user relies on daily, not as a blanket display correction for the whole device. Set it once per app, and leave it.

The broader One UI 9 pattern and what to watch at launch

Per-app scaling is the most distinctive piece of software work in One UI 9, but it fits a recognizable pattern: Samsung making deliberate, incremental changes to eliminate friction that foldable users encounter on a daily basis.

The Fold 8 series now stores rotation lock preferences separately per display. Users who prefer landscape on the inner screen and portrait on the cover display no longer have to manually reset orientation each time they switch between the two. Previously this required building a Bixby Routine; it's now native OS behavior, Android Authority reported today. Small on paper, significant in practice for anyone who switches between displays throughout the day.

One UI 9 also brings a new 90:10 three-app split-screen layout. The standard Fold 8 can arrange three apps side by side vertically in a true three-column configuration. The Fold 8 Ultra appears more limited, supporting a one-plus-two stacked arrangement rather than three apps lined up side by side, due to its narrower form factor. Samsung's official documentation confirms three-way split support on the Ultra but doesn't detail the layout differences, Android Authority reported last week.

Taken together, these changes suggest Samsung is treating One UI 9 as a foldable-specific refinement cycle rather than a feature dump. Each addition targets a specific pain point that foldable owners have complained about: orientation resets, multitasking limitations, apps that don't fill the screen sensibly.

The per-app zoom feature is still provisional in ways the rotation and multitasking changes aren't. It's confirmed active on the standard Fold 8 as a Labs toggle. On the Fold 8 Ultra, it appeared in firmware code before surfacing in any device's settings menu and has not been confirmed active, Android Authority noted two days ago. Samsung has not stated whether it will ship across all Fold 8 variants, extend to older Fold devices through the One UI 9 update rollout, or graduate out of Labs into a standard setting.

Three things will determine whether per-app scaling becomes a lasting feature or fades out of the settings menu: whether it ships on retail firmware in a stable state, whether it expands beyond the standard Fold 8, and whether Samsung supports it long-term as Android's own resizability requirements gradually reduce the underlying problem it's solving. The August 7 retail launch is the first real checkpoint. It will also be the point at which provisional becomes definitive, and Samsung's intentions become legible.
