If playing Metal Gear Solid didn't make you want to crawl on the floor of your living room throwing imaginary flash grenades, then I don't think we could be friends. Solid Snake was the man. Period.
Metal Gear has advanced in age and complexity over the years, becoming one of the most beloved franchises ever released, but one of my favorite versions was the Metal Gear Solid on the Game Boy Color.
But who still uses their old GBC in this world of smartphones?
For a better way to step into the shoes of Solid Snake again, use your Samsung Galaxy S3 instead. All you need to play old Game Boy Color games is the right emulator and your a game ROM file.
Step 1: Download a GBC Emulator
To play Game Boy Color games on the GS3, you'll need to download and install Gameboy Color A.D. from the Google Play Store. It's a completely free emulator by BSlapps that lets you play any old Game Boy Color ROM you want.
Step 2: Finding Your ROM
Now, like any emulator out there, Gameboy Color A.D. does not come with any games on it, so you'll need to find some ROMs online. Just do a quick search on Google for "Game Boy Color ROM" and you'll find a bunch of game titles available.
When you find the one you want (a .ZIP file works best), just download it directly on your GS3.
Legality of Downloading ROMs
ROMs are basically games in pure data form, so unless you already own the titles you want to download, I can't advise you to download them. It's kind of a gray area, and technically anyone can download a ROM, but just make sure you know that it may or may not be okay.
Step 3: Loading Your GBA Games
Open up Gameboy Color A.D. and you should be taken to a Load game screen. You'll need to locate your ROM(s) and load it.
Step 4: Play!
You can play games horizontally or vertically if you want the original GBC look. Just beware—if you switch orientation during gameplay, your game may restart. At least that was the case with Metal Gear Solid.
And that's all there is to it. For more old-school gaming options on your GS3, check out our other softModder guides.
